Merseyrail plans emergency service if staff strike

Merseyrail may run only an emergency service this weekend if the RMT stages a strike over pay.

Only the Southport line could have a 15-minute service on Saturday and Sunday, to take spectators to the Open Golf championships at Royal Birkdale, which started on Sunday.

However, the outlook is not yet clear, because union members are currently voting on a revised pay offer, and the voting ends at midday tomorrow (17 July).

The RMT had rejected a 4 per cent pay increase, but Merseyrail said it had then offered a 7.25 per cent rise over two years, which would be backdated to January of this year, and this is now the subject of the ballot.

The walkouts could involve station retailers, station assistants, train managers, revenue protection officers, control centre staff, cleaners and some head office employees.

If an emergency service runs, the only stations served will be Liverpool Central, Blundellsands & Crosby, Hillside (for Royal Birkdale) and Southport.

Trains would run between 09.00 and 21.00, with a break during the middle of the day.
