Storm disruption continuing in Midlands, Wales and Cornwall

Train services have returned to normal in most places after the disruption caused by Storm Goretti, but there are still problems in the West Midlands, Wales and Cornwall.

There are still no trains today between Shrewsbury and Birmingham New Street, while National Rail said services between Birmingham New Street, Lichfield Trent Valley and Rugeley Trent Valley will not start this morning until about 10.00.

Great Western Railway said there would be no trains today on the Cornish lines to Falmouth Docks and Newquay, and trains would not return to the Newquay line before Monday.

In Wales, there are no trains on the Heart of Wales line between Swansea and Shrewsbury today.

Road replacement services are running in most cases.

Network Rail’s route director for Wales and the Borders Nick Millington said: ‘Storm Goretti brought extremely challenging conditions, including heavy snow, high winds and freezing temperatures, which resulted in issues in several locations. Our teams worked tirelessly to clear lines, repair damage and inspect the railway.

‘While much of the network is now reopening, there will be some ongoing disruption as we complete recovery work and return the railway to full service. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience and our colleagues and partners for their hard work in very difficult conditions.’
