Railways buried in snow as Scottish cold snap continues

Snow and ice are continuing to obstruct train services in Scotland, as the cold snap continues.
Some lines in the Highlands have disappeared under the snow and Network Rail is using a fleet of snow ploughs to clear the tracks, but more heavy falls are predicted today, with temperatures at Inverness hovering around freezing point.
ScotRail has suspended services between Inverness, Kyle of Lochalsh and Aberdeen, and also in the Montrose area, but the Far North Line and the section between Inverness and Elgin were ‘returning to normal’ on Tuesday morning.
ScotRail is also warning that further disruption is possible because yellow snow warnings are in force, while replacement buses often cannot be provided because roads are blocked as well.
ScotRail said: ‘Our control room will continue to monitor the weather and deploy staff to the area which needs attention. We have requested buses for today and will confirm if road conditions will allow us to run any.’
ScotRail’s service delivery director Mark Ilderton added: ‘Despite the challenging weather conditions in the north of the country, the majority of the ScotRail network remains open, and we’re working closely with our Network Rail colleagues as efforts continue to safely restore services where heavy snow is impacting the railway.
‘The Met Office yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been extended until Tuesday, covering the entire country. Conditions can change quickly, so we’d encourage customers to plan ahead and check their journey before travelling.’
Meanwhile, services in Wales and parts of northern England which had been affected by the cold weather are reported by National Rail to have returned to normal.
