LNER stabbing hero leaves hospital

The LNER
traincrew member who intervened at the risk of his own life when a man started stabbing his passengers has been discharged from hospital and is now continuing his recovery at home.

Eleven people needed hospital treatment, some of them for serious injuries.

Samir (‘Sam’) Zitouni, 48, was critically hurt after he had protected people on the train, and LNER managing director David Horne has described his actions as ‘incredibly brave’, adding that ‘we are so proud of him’.

British Transport Police, who have also praised his heroism, said: ‘Samir Zitouni had been in a critical condition having suffered multiple injuries, and thanks to the efforts of NHS medical staff he’s been able to be discharged from hospital today to continue his recovery at home.

His family have said: ‘We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from the public, and very touched by all the kind words about Sam’s brave actions on the night of the attack.

‘While we are really happy to have him home, he still has a significant recovery ahead and we would now like to be left in privacy to care for him as a family.’

Customer host Sam, who has more than 20 years of railway service, had been on duty on board a train from Doncaster to London on 1 November, which made an emergency stop at Huntingdon after it was diverted from the up fast to up slow line, thanks to a swift response by driver Andrew Johnson and control staff.

Anthony Williams, 32, of Peterborough, was remanded in custody at the town’s magistrates’ court on 3 November, charged with 10 counts of attempted murder, two counts of possession of a bladed article and one count of actual bodily harm. One of the charges of attempted murder is in connection with an earlier incident at Pontoon Dock station on the Docklands Light Railway.

Williams is due to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on 1 December.
