Train stabbings: accused man in court

Anthony Williams, the man accused on 10 counts of attempted murder, one count of actual bodily harm and one count of possession of a bladed article after a stabbing attack on an LNER train on Saturday, has been remanded in custody.

Williams was in handcuffs, a grey sweatshirt and trousers, and the hearing at Peterborough Magistrates' Court lasted just seven minutes.

The charge of causing actual bodily harm relates to an alleged incident at a police station after the 32-year old man had been arrested at Huntingdon station, and it is said that an officer sustained a broken nose.

Williams is now set to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on 1 December.

Meanwhile the LNER train manager who was seriously hurt as he tried to protect other passengers is in a ‘critical but stable’ condition in hospital, according to transport secretary Heidi Alexander.

She told the BBC: ‘He put himself in harm's way and there are people who are alive today who wouldn't be alive had it not been for his actions.’

The train involved departed from Platform 2 at Huntingdon earlier today, heading north, and National Rail says the station has now reopened.
