Widespread railway disruption in north as Storm Floris sweeps in

People are being urged not to attempt train journeys in the north of England and Scotland today, as Storm Floris brings 100km/h winds and heavy rain which will sweep eastwards during the day.

The Met Office has issued an Amber warning, and many lines in Scotland will be closed or have fewer and slower services. Network Rail has imposed a blanket speed restriction of 50mph (80km/h) on all Scottish lines as a safety precaution.

Services have been suspended on a number of suburban routes in Strathclyde, while further north no trains will run from later this morning on the lines from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth to Aberdeen and Inverness or in the Highlands between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh and the Far North. The West Highland Line to Fort William, Oban and Mallaig will also be closed.

Avanti West Coast is advising its passengers not to travel north of Preston, while some East Coast Main Line operators, including LNER, say their northern limit today will be Newcastle.

CrossCountry says it will not be running north of the Scottish central belt nor between Edinburgh and Glasgow after midday. It hopes to maintain services from English stations to Edinburgh, but this will be ‘subject to disruption caused by the storm’. It warns that these trains, if they run at all, will be full.

TransPennine Express will not be running north of Carlisle and Newcastle, while Caledonian Sleeper trains will be cancelled north of the central belt tonight. Sleepers are expected to run between London, Edinburgh and Glasgow, but they will be delayed.

It will continue to be wet and very windy for the rest of the day, but the winds are forecast to ease in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
