WOMEN ON THE RAILWAY (DR BECKY POCOCK)

The talk will explore the roles of women on the railway from 1850 to the end of 1945. The roles that women took up with the onset of war and the prejudice they faced will be examined. Included is a film entitled ‘Bundles for Berlin’ shot by the Southern Railway Film Department in WWII.

THE SELSEY TRAMWAY (JOE WHICHER)

VOLKS ELECTRIC RAILWAY (IAN GLEDHILL)

Ian will describe the story of electrical pioneer Magnus Vokes, who opened his little electric railway on Brighton seafront in 1883, which is now the world's oldest working electric railway. The short lived "Daddy Long Legs", an electric railway that ran in the sea, will also be mentioned.
