Cumbrian line closed for tunnel strengthening work

The Cumbrian Coast Line has been closed between Whitehaven and Corkicle until further notice after Network Rail engineers discovered weaknesses in the floor of Bransty Tunnel.

Work was already underway inside the tunnel in preparation for track and drainage renewals over the next couple of months, but tests to make sure that the heavy plant and machinery needed for the work could be brought to the site revealed weak areas under the railway which must be dealt with first.

Specialist engineers are now planning how to carry out this extra work, and Network Rail has closed Bransty Tunnel to all traffic until further notice.

Rail replacement buses are running between Workington and Sellafield, although they are not calling at Nethertown or Braystones. Passengers from these stations are being asked to contact Northern.

Network Rail’s North West route infrastructure director Darren Miller said: ‘The preparatory surveys have revealed previously unknown ground conditions which we need to investigate further so we can carry out repairs and get the line reopened as soon as possible.

‘We’re working closely with Northern and our freight customers on alternative routes and rail replacement bus services. I’d encourage anyone planning to travel on the Cumbrian Coast Line to regularly check National Rail Enquiries while we work hard to restore services through Bransty Tunnel.’

Northern regional director Craig Harrop added: ‘We understand that this news is disappointing for those who rely on the Cumbrian Coast. We will continue to do everything we can to keep people moving along the route whilst the tunnel remains closed.’
