Trains return to Troon after destructive fire closed station

ALL ScotRail services between Glasgow and Ayr are running normally again this morning, after the line was closed by a destructive fire at Troon station just under two weeks ago.

The seat of the blaze on 17 July appears to have been the ticket office on platform 1, where the main building was badly damaged after the flames spread to the roof space. Equipment carrying the overhead wires was also affected and the line to Ayr had to be closed until 23 July. During this time Network Rail engineers installed special supports for the beams over the tracks which support the overhead line equipment, and new overhead power cables were also needed.

From 23 July trains still could not call at Troon itself, where repair work was continuing, but platform 2, which is the opposite platform, was reopened on 26 July.

Police have not been treating the incident as suspicious, but the cause has not yet been revealed.

ScotRail has welcomed the return of the full service at Troon today, although the ticket office has remained closed for the time being.

Operations director David Simpson said: ’We are delighted to be able to reopen both platforms at Troon after the fire that destroyed so many of the station buildings forced Network Rail to close the line. We’re sure passengers understand how difficult it’s been to restore services given the extreme circumstances of what happened.

‘It’s been a real team effort by Scotland’s Railway to get trains running normally again between Glasgow and Ayr less than two weeks after the blaze.’

I do hope that the station building can be saved. Or will it be demolished and to be rebuilt.
