20 June: news in brief

‘Falling prop shaft’ damaged Glasgow signal cables

DISRUPTION to train services from Glasgow Central is reported to have been caused by a prop shaft which fell off a Class 156 diesel unit, damaging signalling cables. The incident happened yesterday near Shields Junction on the line to Paisley. At least 100 trains were delayed or cancelled because of the damage. ScotRail said the disruption had affected trains to Ardrossan Harbour, Ayr, Gourock, Largs, Neilston, Paisley Canal, East Kilbride, Kilmarnock and Wemyss Bay. The damage had been repaired by 06.50, but many trains were now out of position, accumulating more than 1.300 delay minutes. ScotRail said ‘The detail on the 156 is being looked at as the probable cause.’
