RMT calls for better legal protection for transport staff
The RMT is demanding stronger legal protection for transport workers, as violent incidents continue to rise. The union has called on the Government to introduce a specific criminal offence for assaulting public transport workers ahead of a House of Lords debate.
London Underground services may be disrupted later this month, after RMT drivers voted in favour of a strike in protest at Transport for London proposals to introduce a four day working week, although TfL said the shorter week would be optional.
Former Railtrack chief executive Gerald Corbett has warned that the government’s plans for Great British Railways will leave the industry’s ‘directing mind’ at risk of interference by ministers. Mr Corbett was speaking as he launched his new book ‘When something happens ? Inside Railtrack: a CEO shares his story for the first time’, in which he recollects his years at Railtrack.
