Services restored between Leeds and York after derailment

TRAINS are running again between Leeds and York via Church Fenton after an engineering train became derailed early yesterday, according to National Rail.

Rail passengers between the two cities had to travel via Harrogate after the incident in the small hours of yesterday morning in which five wagons of an engineering train left the rails. No one was injured, but track, points and signals were damaged.

Network Rail said work to recover the wagons and repair the track had continued overnight, but that the process had been made more complex by the fact that the wagons were carrying long sections of new rail.

Inspectors from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch have been gathering evidence at the scene.

Can't understand why they didn't think of reversing at Leeds and running via Methley/Castlefield right away, or running through to Selby (or just as far as Gascoigne Wood yard) and reversing there. Do these planners actually have map of the rail network?

Eventually somebody got their brain into gear and Trans Pennine trains reversed at Leeds and ran via Methley and Castleford (in both directions) to regain their booked route at Church Fenton with about 20-25" delay.
