Derailed engineering train blocking line

AN engineering train became partially derailed in the small hours of this morning, disrupting services between York and Leeds.

The accident occurred at Church Fenton, where five wagons became derailed just before 02.00 today.

No one was hurt. The train had been delivering new rails, and engineers were called to the scene to arrange for the line to be cleared and repaired. Inspectors from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch have also been called to the site, and they will say in due course what they believe caused the wagons to leave the track.

The derailment is affecting Northern, CrossCountry, TransPennine Express and LNER services, although the route from Leeds to York via Harrogate is operating normally. North & East route director Matt Rice said he was grateful for passengers’ patience while the main line is restored.
