Action taken to correct 'wobble' on High Speed trains

THE Hitachi-built fleet of High Speed trains running from St Pancras International to various destinations in Kent is being modified after passengers complained that the Class 395 units were ‘wobbling’ at speed.

Southeastern has conceded that there is a ‘slight sideways movement’ which has been also noticed by train staff and recorded by on-board computers.

So far, 10 of the 29 units have been modified at their traincare centre in Ashford by adding dampers, and the rest will be dealt with over the coming year.

Southeastern said it was a teething problem, and that there were ‘absolutely no safety issues’.

It's believed that the problem is caused by the fact that the 395s must run on both High Speed and conventional tracks, and that the vehicles’ suspension needs modification to cope.

The fleet will be at the heart of rail transport between central London and Stratford for the Olympic fortnight in summer 2012, when the units will be dubbed ‘Javelins’.
