THE driver of a sewage tanker which collided with a train at a user-worked level crossing near the Suffolk/Essex border has been charged with endangering the safety of the railway.

Train services on the branch line between Sudbury and Mark's Tey were replaced by buses for three days after Tuesday's collision, in which more than 20 people were injured and the diesel unit involved was badly damaged.

A 58-year old man was badly hurt and was reported to be 'serious but stable' at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

The driver of the National Express East Coast service from Sudbury sustained a fractured vertebra. In addition, three men and two women were treated for broken ribs, back pain, chest pain and heavy bruising.

The tanker driver has been named as Arvydas Bartasius, aged 38, of Hawthorn Close in Ely. He appeared before Bury St Edmunds magistrates on Friday, and was remanded on conditional bail until 1 October.
