Most train operators back in business as weather relents

MOST train operating companies have returned to running full timetables today, ATOC said.

Cancellations fell to 1 per cent during Tuesday morning, but some cancellations are continuing on East Coast between London and Leeds.

There is no Transpennine Express service between Manchester and Newcastle, and a few cancellations on Northern Rail in the Manchester area. Buses also continue to replace ScotRail trains between Inverness, Aviemore and Perth.

Eurostar is running a near-normal service, and has increased a self-imposed speed restriction through Kent from 170km/h to 230km/h. A spokesman said the normal timetable should be restored at the end of this week.

But First Capital Connect is still running a limited service on its Thameslink route, as efforts continue to repair units which were damaged by the icy conditions last week. However, the frequency has improved today to the level of the emergency timetable which was introduced on 14 December as a result of the long-running pay dispute with drivers. The result of their referendum on whether to accept a pay deal worth some 5 per cent over two years is expected tomorrow or Thursday.
