Recycling award for Tube Lines

Office waste being segregated
TUBE Lines has won the Waste Management Initiative in the Commercial and Public Sector award in recognition of its commitment to reduce material consumption and landfill waste disposal.
The award – presented by ITV News economics editor Daisy McAndrew – comes in the same year that Tube Lines employee Charlotte Simmonds was named Environment manager of the Year.
To help achieve a year-end target of reducing its carbon footprint by 5,000 tonnes of CO2, the company has implemented general paper, construction waste and office recycling which have been recognised by the Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management Awards.
Tube lines has invested in a paper recycling vehicle to collect waste from its 255 trains, 100 stations, six depots and three offices. Last year it recycled 1,714 tonnes of paper and ploughed money saved from landfill disposal costs into its Community support Fund, supplementing employee charity donations by around £22,700.
Also recognised was its improved office recycling facilities which last May replaced all personal desk waste bins with centrally located receptacles for wet and dry paper waste. This initiative increased the office recycling rate by 73 per cent.
Philip Constable, head of Tube Lines’ distribution services, said: “Good environmental practice makes good business sense, and I am pleased that our efforts to drive through sustainable waste management initiatives have been recognised.”
