The Prime Minister has hinted that he is ready to reform rail fares.

Speaking to the BBC this morning, he said: ‘I put buses under public control in Greater Manchester, and because of that I have control of the fares, and I could reduce the fares.

‘We’ve just put rail under public control, [but] what we have not done yet is remodel the rail fares, so that we can get more public benefit for people there, and that it is something I am looking at as well.’

Regulated rail fares in England were frozen until next March by the government of Andy Burnham’s predecessor Sir Keir Starmer.

There are two areas which could be reformed. One is the structure of tariffs, which can result in many different fares for the same journey, and the other is cost.

Mr Burnham has already said that cutting the cost of travelling by train is ‘within his sights’, and there is the possibility of a new national railcard, which would be available to people of any age.
