Last six platforms at Glasgow High Level to reopen

The last six
platforms at Glasgow Central High Level will reopen on Wednesday, said ScotRail, although some entrances will still not be in use.

The whole station was closed on 8 March after a building alongside had been gutted by fire, and Glasgow Central was cordoned off for safety reasons.

At first, even trains at the Low Level platforms were running through without stopping, but they were able to call again from 11 March, and high level platforms 7 to 15 reopened on 18 March.

The lack of six platforms meant that services on a number of ScotRail routes had to remain suspended, while neither CrossCountry nor TransPennine Express could use the station either.

There is still an exclusion zone around the area worst affected by the fire, so the entrances from Gordon Street and Union Street will remain closed until further notice.

Although all platforms will be available again on Wednesday, ScotRail warned of some minor disruption at first because some trains were out of position.

ScotRail chief operating officer David Ross said: ‘This is excellent news for our customers, and I am very pleased we will be able to resume our normal timetable when Glasgow Central High Level reopens for business on Wednesday.

‘We understand how frustrating the closure has been for customers whose journeys have been disrupted, and we’re very sorry for the impact it has had.

‘Safety is our priority, and the decision to reopen the high level has only been taken following comprehensive safety checks by Glasgow City Council and Network Rail.

‘We know some people will be travelling by rail for the first time since the fire, so we will have staff on hand at Glasgow Central and across the network to support customers and answer any questions.’
