Trains return to Glasgow Central High Level, but disruption continues

T
rains are departing from Glasgow Central High Level again today, ten days after a major fire had gutted a building next to the station.

The Low Level platforms were reopened to passengers a week ago, but High Level has remained closed until now while extensive safety checks were carried out.

National Rail says platforms 7 to 15 at Central have reopened today, but some station entrances are still closed, along with most facilities like the ticket office, shops and toilets.

Although some ScotRail routes from High Level have reopened, there are still no through trains from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh via Shotts, Cathcart Circle stations, Paisley Canal, Newton, Barrhead, Stranraer, Ardrossan Harbour, Largs, Neilston or Carlisle via Dumfries.

In some cases services are available from Glasgow Central which involve a change of train at an intermediate station, such as Kilmarnock for Dumfries, Carlisle and Stranraer.

Some intercity services have also returned. Avanti West Coast is running one train an hour from Glasgow Central to London Euston and Caledonian Sleeper services will return to Glasgow Central tonight, but CrossCountry has warned that it cannot serve Glasgow yet, and its passengers are being advised to use Edinburgh until further notice.

TransPennine Express services are also still suspended between Carlisle and Glasgow, and TPE has warned of possible disruption on other routes because traincrew are out of position.

CrossCountry managing director Shiona Rolfe said: ‘I’m sorry to CrossCountry passengers affected by continued disruption at Glasgow Central following the serious fire on Union Street. We’re ready to restart our services to and from Glasgow as soon as capacity is available – but we must work together as an industry to reopen the station safely.’

ScotRail’s chief operating officer David Ross said: ‘I am very pleased we will be able to welcome customers back to Glasgow Central High Level.

‘We realise the closure is causing significant disruption for our customers, and we’re very sorry for the impact it is still having on journeys.

‘Resuming services on the High Level platforms is a big step forward and will ensure as many people as possible can travel into Glasgow city centre.

‘The safety of our customers and staff remains our absolute priority, and while we have limited platforms and access points to the station available, we will operate as many services as we can. We will keep the timetable under regular review and when it is safe to add more services we will do so.’
