Ten people have been hurt, some seriously, in a series of stabbing attacks on board an LNER train last night.

The train was the 18.25 from Doncaster to London King’s Cross, which usually starts from York at 18.02 but had been changed to start at Doncaster because of engineering work. The attacks began after the train had called at Peterborough.

The driver made an emergency stop at Huntingdon after the alarm was raised, where armed police were able to meet the train.

The reason for the attacks is unknown, but two people were arrested. One now been released without charge.

British Transport Police arrived at the station at 19.42, and said that a major incident had been declared. Counter Terrorism officers are also involved.

Chief Superintendent Chris Casey said: ‘This is a shocking incident and first and foremost my thoughts are with those who have been injured this evening and their families.

‘We’re conducting urgent enquiries to establish what has happened, and it could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything further. At this early stage it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident.

‘Our response is ongoing at the station and will be for some time. Cordons are in place and trains are not currently running through the area, and there are also some road closures.’

The nine-car Azuma set is stlll on Platform 2 at Huntingdon station, where it has been cordoned off as a crime scene.

LNER issued a Do Not Travel notice last night. LNER managing director David Horne said: ‘We are deeply shocked and saddened by this serious incident, and our thoughts are very much with everyone involved.

’I would like to thank the emergency services for their quick and professional response and the care they have provided to those injured. Anyone with information who hasn’t already spoken to police is urged to contact British Transport Police.’

Huntingdon station will remain closed today, and East Coast Main Line services are disrupted south of Peterborough.
