Plans to be submitted for new main line station in Wales

A FIVE week statutory public consultation has started today on a scheme to build a new station called Cardiff Parkway, on the Newport side of the Welsh capital.

The consultation is in preparation for an application for outline planning consent to be submitted soon. The £120 million station would serve a major new business district at St Mellons, which could cover more than 86,000 square metres and provide up to 6,000 jobs.

The greenfield site is on farmland, and the station project is being promoted by Cardiff Parkway Developments Ltd, a joint venture between financial services firm Investec, the Welsh Government and two businessmen, Nigel and Andrew Roberts. Construction could start next year, with the station opening to passengers in 2024.
