1 May: news in brief

Familiar voices are guests at stations

A NUMBER of well-known people are making special announcements at Network Rail stations this week. The guests on station public address systems include Gary Lineker, Claudia Winkleman, Beverley Knight, Lord Sugar and President Trump (although his voice is actually provided by Rory Bremner). The recordings, which were all donated free of charge, also include messages of thanks to essential workers from Chris Moyles, Alan Carr, Arlene Phillips, Edith Bowman and Rick Edwards. The guest announcers have made their debut at stations on Network Rail’s Southern region, such as London Victoria, Cannon Street, Waterloo and Charing Cross, as well as London Bridge, Clapham Junction and Guildford. The recordings will then be used at Network Rail stations around the country.

More train horns say ‘thanks, NHS’

THE latest rail depot to say thank you to the staff of the NHS has been Soho LMD in Smethwick. Last night, which was ‘clap Thursday’, saw staff at Soho arrange a celebratory chorus of horns and flashing headlights on ten Class 323 units on the stabling sidings at the depot.
