Mystery overhead line damage disrupts West Coast

OVERHEAD lines have been damaged between Birmingham and Coventry -- but Network Rail has been unable to say how the damage occurred.

Engineers are making repairs near Birmingham International after train services began to be disrupted at about 06.30 this morning. Intending passengers in the area are being advised to check before they attempt to travel. It is not yet known when the repairs will be completed.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “Our priority at this stage is to quickly and safely repair the damage so the railway can be reopened as soon as possible. Services are running but some have had to be cancelled and some are being diverted. We appreciate this is causing disruption to passengers but can assure them we are doing all we can to fix the issue. We are working closely with the affected train operators and our advice to passengers is to check before they travel and allow extra time to complete their journeys.”

At one time, there was disruption to the running of services on the Airedale Line because ... there was a bed sheet on the overhead lines. No doubt that would have been done by inconsiderate youths, and I hope the disruption to West Coast Main Line services wasn't caused by youngsters. Just because they're off school doesn't mean they should cause unnecessary disruption to hard-working people's business.
