She was also parliamentary private secretary to defence secretary Secretary of State Philip Hammon from 2011 to 2013 and was appointed assistant Whip in October 2013.

A further post has also been created at the DfT of minister of state, and John Hayes has been named as the new minister. He has been the Conservative MP for South Holland and The Deepings since 1997 and was most recently minister without portfolio. Earlier in the present government he occupied ministerial roles in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Department for Education and the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Other ministers in the DfT have remained in their posts, including transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin and Baroness Susan Kramer. She remains as minister of state as well, representing the Department in the House of Lords.
