East Anglia lines disrupted by coastal floods

This line was blocked at Lenzie, near Glasgow, after Thursday's storm

TRAINS are running again in Scotland after yesterday's storm, but some Greater Anglia services remain suspended, as tidal surges continue today.

There are no train services along parts of the Norfolk and Suffolk coast, although inland lines are close to normal again after overnight repairs.

Further north, East Midlands Trains services to Skegness and Barnetby were still affected on Friday morning but have now been restored, while disruption also continued in North Wales, after sea walls were breached between Chester and Rhyl.

In East Anglia, Network Rail engineers have been working to restore damage at Diss, Manningtree and Wivenhoe, and main line services between London and Norwich were reported to be running.

But all trains were cancelled early today from Norwich to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth, and also from Ipswich to Felixstowe and Lowestoft, because of coastal flooding.

Network Rail said hundreds of its engineers had been out in 'atrocious conditions to reopen scores of lines closed by fallen trees, trampolines and even giant hay bales'.

Robin Gisby, director of operations said: "The industry has dealt with the impact of a very severe winter storm. People have coped marvellously well with the situation, both as passengers and as employees, as we now start to return the network to normal operations but that task will take many hours yet."
