Rail minister resigns in bid to become deputy Speaker

RAIL minister Simon Burns has resigned from the Government to compete for the vacant position of Deputy Speaker in the House of Commons.

One of the three deputy posts is available following the resignation of Nigel Evans.

In his resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Burns said: "It has been a privilege to serve in your administration for the past three and a quarter years and I will be forever grateful to you for giving me that opportunity in both the Departments of Health and Transport."

Mr Cameron replied that he knew the decision would not have been easy. He added: "You will certainly be missed, but I completely understand and respect your decision."

A Cabinet reshuffle is expected this autumn, particularly focusing on junior ministers.
