We are looking for four people, based in London, Manchester, York and Glasgow.

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is transforming the rail industry, ensuring it becomes safer, more efficient and offers high levels of passenger satisfaction. The railway industry is important economically and socially; it is a growing sector with increasing passenger numbers and freight traffic. As a health and safety inspector, you will part of a strong team providing consistent health and safety regulation across the railway network, to improve health and safety for passengers, the workforce and the public. We are currently looking for oneindividual to join us as trainee inspector in one of our Network Rail teams.

About the role

This is an interesting and varied role and an opportunity to make a difference to health and safety on the railway. The UK railway is one of the safest in Europe, but there is more to do to ensure current Health &safety standards are sustained and improved. Inspectors ensure that the rail industry complies with health and safety law and strives to achieve zero industry caused fatalities to passengers, the workforce or the public. You will work in a team with a number of other inspectors carrying-out on-site inspections, audits and investigations, providing verbal and written advice to Network Rail and railway operators and where necessary taking formal enforcement action. You will represent ORR professionally with a range of stakeholders and you will have access to support from technical specialists and engineers in ORR.

We provide a comprehensive training programme, which includes both academic study and practical hands-on experience working alongside more experienced Inspectors. As your skills and knowledge develop, you will start to work on your own, but with support and supervision close at hand.

About you

This is a great opportunity and career for a talented individual with an engineering or science background, with experience of either regulating health and safety orworking in the rail sector. It is important that you demonstrate the right aptitude and skills for the inspector role. You will be able to quickly grasp a wide range of new concepts, be objective, flexible and resilient when faced with challenge. You will have the confidence, credibility and communication skills to express yourself clearly and assertively and to represent ORR to a wide range of people. You will be self-motivated and have the determination to succeed. You will enjoy analysing complex situations and demonstrate good judgement and decision-making. Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience, you must also demonstrate the capability to attain a post-graduate diploma in safety and health.
