MSc or Diploma in Railway Systems Engineering and Integration (RSEI)

The University of Birmingham offers broad-based postgraduate study and continuous professional development for experienced railway staff and future railway systems engineers. Qualified candidates are invited to enrol for higher degree studies leading to the academic awards of MSc or Diploma in Railway Systems Engineering and Integration (RSEI) Starting in September 2007

Programme Outline:
Railway systems engineers specify and manage the resources required to conceive, design, build, operate and maintain railways of all types, respecting the constraints imposed by the physical features of the mode, as well as its organisational and operational characteristics. Formal systems integration approaches allow people to carry out their tasks in major projects more effectively.

The RSEI programme is taught by academic experts and industry speakers and is strongly recommended by the engineering institutions. Many railway undertakings, manufacturers and consultancy organisations support participation by their staff in the programme on a full time, part time or occasional basis.

Graduates of the programme are working in senior positions throughout the world’s railway industry and provide regular inputs to individual modules as lecturers and tutors.

Further course and module details are available at:

http://www.eng.bham.ac.uk/civil/pg/railway.htm

Full Time Diploma Programme:
The taught programme consists of eight intensive week-long modules and two research modules, covering the main disciplines and skills involved in railway engineering, operations and management. The minimum duration to achieve the Diploma level is eight months of full-time university based study.

Full Time Masters Programme:
The MSc qualification is awarded on successful completion of the taught programme, two research modules, a European Study Tour and five months of project work, culminating in the presentation of a dissertation.

Part Time Masters Programme:
The part time study programme runs over two or three years, involving ten week-long periods of attendance in Birmingham, with the project undertaken in industry.

Special arrangements are in place for part-time students from continental Europe and overseas.

Occasional Programme:
All modules are available on an individual basis to assemble programmes of continuous professional development (CPD) that may lead to an intermediate qualification.
