The Part 1 - Operating and Train Working course is targeted at staff in the train operating and infrastructure maintenance/renewal companies, or those in Network Rail wishing to gain an understanding in basic operating principles, passenger train and station working, and freight train operation. This part also contains a section on personal and group track safety and a section on the protection of engineering activities. Both AC and DC electrification systems are also studied in this course, based on the Rule Book, G, M, P, S, SP, SS, T and TW sections.
The Part 2 - Operating and Signalling course is primarily intended for those who wish to increase their knowledge of signalling principles, and includes modules on Track Circuit Block, Absolute Block, Electric Token Block, Tokenless Block, No Signaller Token Block and One Train Working With Train Staff signalling regulations. Network Rail encourages its own signalling staff to take this course, but applications are welcomed from staff from other companies or other staff within Network Rail who wish to improve their appreciation of signalling rules. This course is based on the Rule Book, covering in particular the Train Signalling (TS1 to 8) and other relevant sections.
The courses each consist of eight papers returned to a personal tutor for marking on a fortnightly basis. A coursebook is supplied for each course, providing an introduction and commentary to the subjects covered. Students who complete at least six papers are eligible to sit final examinations held in April 2008. Full coverage is given to amendments and new rules & regulations published since the last course, which is a useful means of learning and applying changes.
