Arriva Trains Wales man Paul Baker, 26, said he was “over the moon” after his partner Gemma Newell, 21, a train cleaner at Shrewsbury station, popped the question while travelling on the 09.18 Shrewsbury to Milford Haven service on the last day of February.

The couple met last year and Gemma confessed that she had been waiting to ask Paul to marry her and thought there was no better moment than 29 February.

Gemma, who lives in Wolverhampton, said: “We’ve been together six months and I asked him to marry me because I love him.”

Paul, of Newport, said: “We were on the Milford Haven train when she asked me.
“I was not expecting it at all and it’s amazing – I’m over the moon.

“I said yes straightaway. I love Gemma and we’re both really happy.”

The couple have not yet set a date to tie the knot but are searching for a home to share in Wolverhampton.

The only other question still to be answered is, who should buy who the engagement ring?
